Anton Schwartz Quartet Read the short list of saxman Anton Schwartz's influences (including legends like John Coltrane and Stanley Turrentine, as well as less-cited heroes like Ben Webster and Warne Marsh), and you immediately recognize that his playing is all about style. Even more, Schwartz's laid-back compositions all move with grace and sophistication, stylish with enduring harmony and genuine melody -- not just improvised leads meant as an introduction to extended solo sections. With a high-powered band featuring percussionist Josh Jones as well as pianist Paul Nagel, bassist John Shifflet, and drummer Scott Morris, the Anton Schwartz Quartet comes to the Kuumbwa Jazz Center Friday, beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door. -- Rob Pratt |
